Weekend Watchdog

Every Friday in our Weekend Watchdog feature, we post suggested questions for scheduled Sunday guests. You can add your own questions in the comment thread. We’ll also include contact information for the shows, so we can let them know what their viewers want asked.

There will no be Watchdog segment on Air America’s Seder on Sundays this week, because this week’s show is a “Super Bowl Super Book Show,” but come back here on Monday for our usual Weekend Watchdog Wrap-up.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. (Fox News Sunday, CBS’ Face The Nation) is on the verge of pulling away with the Republican nomination, with the help of softball treatment from many in the media.

Let’s give the media some help, with three possible Watchdog questions for McCain.

1. You were asked in Wednesday’s debate if Americans are better off than they were eight years ago. You responded:

I think you could argue that Americans overall are better off, because we have had a pretty good prosperous time, with low unemployment and low inflation and a lot of good things have happened. A lot of jobs have been created. But let’s have some straight talk. Things are tough right now.

How is simultaneously arguing that Americans are “better off,” and that things are “tough right now,” in any way straight talk?

2. One of your prescriptions for improving the economy is to completely scrap the Alternative Minimum Tax, which is intended to prevent the wealthiest in America from shirking their tax responsibilities.

How would further skewing the tax code the benefit the wealthy help the overall economy?

3. When asked about your willingness to stay in Iraq for “100 years,” you responded, “It’s a false argument. We are going to be there for some period of time, but it’s American casualties, not American presence.”

But since there is a direct link between the Iraqi people’s rejection of permanent military bases and support for attacks on U.S. troops, and our intelligence community has said that “fear of Western domination” fuels “the spread of the jihadist movement,” isn’t it a false argument to claim it isn’t about American presence?
